How to Build a Strong College List

  • What you need to consider when investigating colleges.
  • Recommended assessments to determine search criteria, major fit, and more.
  • Assessing cost, financial aid estimates, and merit scholarships when building your list.
  • How demonstrated interest factors into admissions decisions and how to authentically demonstrate you interest in a college.

Applications

  • What different admissions deadlines mean and how you can best choose which is right for you.
  • Introducing the different types of college applications (UC, CSU, Common Application, Apply Texas, and others).
  • Test optional? Test blind? Test required? How to determine if you need to send an SAT/ACT score.
  • How to choose the right people for recommendation letters and what makes a great recommendation letter.
  • How to keep organized throughout the admissions process and what to expect.

Application Timeline

  • What to expect in the fall and how to keep organized.
  • All students provided with an admissions timeline with important dates/deadlines and milestones to complete as they begin planning for senior fall.

What Makes a Great Essay?

  • Addressing myths about admissions essays.
  • Discussing how and admissions essay is used in the admissions process
  • Introducing common essay prompts and essay lengths (including the UC PIQs & Common App personal statement).
  • Demonstrating how students can keep organized and use essays for similar prompts, eliminating extra writing and drafts.
  • Brainstorming your best topics and identifying what you want to share with admissions officers.

The Great College Essay Test

  • Identifying, defining, and sharing examples of different essay structures.
  • How to choose the best structure that showcases you.
  • Picking a topic and drafting a strong outline.
  • Beginning a draft.
  • Giving and receiving essay feedback.
  • How to know if your essay passes the "Great College Essay Test"
  • Time to draft, write, and receive feedback during the workshop.

College Essay Workshop

Partnering with the College Essay Guy, March Consulting brings you an essay workshop that will help you to efficiently and confidently draft admissions essays. Time to draft and write is also provided.
